GÉROME RIVIÈRE

Why do you film?

Because it amuses me. I really enjoy to see the result on the others, to see them creating another universe. So it makes me want to do it. This is what I like: using all I need to achieve what I have in mind. When I film, eventually, what I do is portraying an idea that I have been thinking of, that I wrote about... It's a great hassle, but a very funny one, isn't it?

If you were to chose a movie that brings back memories what would it be?

The first film that made me say : "Wow, this is a whole new world", the first time I realized that behind a movie there is a director was when I saw Apocalypse Now (Francis Ford Coppola, 1979). It was a crazy thing. I would say : it was mental. The first time I realized that there are costumes. I saw all the layers of the making of the film... This mountain of work ... How a man has an idea in mind, and from there, well, he just has to do it!

I was very young. You had to be twelve to be able to watch it and I was eleven and a half.

People were still smoking at the Grand Rex. I remember that seats still had ashtrays on the armrests! This memory feels like an hallucination, in terms of cinema but also socially.
